Avoid contact with anyone who has been recently immunized with live virus vaccines, such as those for chicken pox, polio or measles. Depending on the type of cancer treatment, some vaccinations should be given while others should be avoided. Talk to the healthcare team about vaccinations. Stay away from anyone who has a cold, the flu or an infectious disease like chicken pox, mumps, measles or shingles. If you have low blood cell counts, take steps to protect yourself. Whenever possible, get enough rest, eat a well-balanced diet, drink plenty of fluids and get regular exercise. Do not take a rectal temperature because this could cause bleeding or an infection in the rectal area. You can also use a special ear thermometer to take the temperature. Take the temperature by mouth or under the arm. People with cancer usually find out they have low white blood cell counts from a blood test or when they get an infection. Leukopenia and neutropenia do not cause any symptoms. It is important to do everything possible to lower the chances of infection and to seek immediate treatment even if you think you have an infection. During nadir, the body’s resistance to infection is weakest. The lowest level that blood cell counts reach is called the nadir. Once the WBC count drops, it remains low for 7–10 days. An infection is likely to occur if the ANC is less than 0.5 x 10 9/L. The risk increases as the neutrophil level drops and the longer it remains low. The risk of developing an infection is greater when the ANC is less than 1.5 x 10 9/L. The neutrophil count usually decreases with the WBC count, but it is possible to have a normal WBC count and still have neutropenia. A person has neutropenia when the ANC is less than 1.9 x 10 9/L.
